pregnancy cravings

everyone keeps asking me if i'm having any pregnancy cravings.  i'm not really sure how to answer that because at 21 weeks, net gain of 5 lbs, and feeling a little bit skeptical about blaming hormones on everything ... i'm not sure if pregnancy cravings are real, or just an excuse women make to justify what they want.

once my first trimester nausea and vomiting stage had passed - which btw, lasted about 3-4 weeks longer than the technical 13 weeks of 1st tri - i was left with a vastly shrunken stomach and enjoying food was a distant memory.  i actually lost 2 lbs in that timeframe, which was kind of weird but at the same time made a lot of sense, given that my portion size per meal was literally cut in half.  alan actually marveled at how little i ate per sitting.  perhaps the baby takes after me in the sense that he was insanely particular - if i didn't have food in me, i was nauseous.  the minute i had too much food, i was nauseous.  there was a thin window of satisfaction ... surrounded by a lot of empty calories in ginger ale and sour/hard candies.

anyhow, now that i'm showing (enough so that people notice, not enough that it's obvious i'm pregnant ... i basically just look overweight.  wonderful) - people tend to ask if i'm craving anything.  now that i can eat again, i wonder that too.  do i want certain foods because the baby wants them, or do i want them because i want them?  (and is either reason a good reason to eat said foods?)

i honestly don't think any pregnant woman NEEDS to eat ice cream.  it seems to me that a lot of pregnant women use pregnancy to justify eating larger quantities and/or items that they want to eat but should not.  particularly since most pregnant women appear to get quite sedentary.

make no mistake - life is tough.  fatigue is real.  i'm having a hard time getting myself to the gym, and i love working out.  but given that my life is being forced to slow down, i hardly think this is the time to be pumping more crap into it.

so i will continue to evaluate this "craving" phenomenon ... so far, everything i've wanted to eat has fallen in the realm of things i usually like to eat.  korean food.  potato chips (sigh ... this is my equivalent to ice cream).  salads with yummy dressing.  (apparently i thought i liked vegetables ... that was false.  i like dressing, and the crunchy things that dressing covers).  pasta.  fruit.  sandwiches.  noodles.  all pretty standard.

though i suppose this has been a good excuse to get and eat more fruit, since fruit is something i love but i'm too lazy to get, cut up, and eat.  today i paid $4 for a container of cut up mangoes.  my inner asian died a little inside, as i'd previously sworn never to pay exorbitant prices for someone else to cut up fruit for me.  but mangoes are a huge pain to cut up, and i read somewhere they're good for pregnancies ... and i love mangoes.  (side note - cut up mangoes from target are not the best).
