fake boyfriends

I got a new fake boyfriend this weekend. I guess after 4 years, it was time to move on.

So to backtrack - there was a time when I needed a fake boyfriend to deter unwanted attention at an event. Being up to the task, C obliged, and I must say, was an excellent fake bf. I think the key to being a good fake bf is being attentive - I suppose to the girl, but more importantly, to the person she's trying to avoid. C had the technique down - turning sideways to box out unwanted entrances to conversations, bringing a drink at convenient times to steer away...and just general presence.

So now that everyone is getting married left and right, there are certain wedding crowds where you go and most of your friends are married or dating. So looking at table arrangements, there comes the odd factor, where being the single person leaves you ... well, odd.

So with TKD weddings, it's been convenient because the tables ended up being 4 couples, C, and me. Having the fake boyfriend has alleviated the awkward moments of finding yourself alone, like when everyone partners up to slow dance, or when the guys go to get coats or drinks or what-not.

However, my life of convenience was recently altered, when C came out of the closet a few months ago. Though some may point out that this actually makes the fake boyfriend situation ideal, it does reduce the amount of attention and focus, and it just feels wrong not to let him go. (Especially when he wants to leave at 11pm to go clubbing. And probably not to a club you can go to together.)

So at L and R's wedding this weekend, I found myself at the standard table (almost the exact same table as D&K's wedding last year), except this time it was 9 of us, C was on the other side, and I was sitting next to RDC - who swears we met when he was a freshman, but I don't recall. So I was joking around about how my fake boyfriend had left me and assigned him to be my new fake boyfriend. (Unlike the actual world of dating, the girl has all the freedom to initiate in fake dating.) I must say, he was very good at it, it was a grand evening. Gentlemanly guys are awesome.

So I came home, and was telling my friend about my weekend, and he goes "wait wait wait - so you just asked some guy to be your fake boyfriend? Isn't that weird?"

"Uh, but it's FAKE!"

Haha. If only real dating was as straightforward as fake dating. And by the way, I'm being completely facetious. But sometimes life is amusing.

TKTS

An old youth group friend was visiting this week, and one thing he wanted to do was see a show. So we went to the TKTS booth in Times Square and stood in line, contemplating which shows we might want to see.

When we finally made it to the front, we found out that the Putnam County Spelling Bee only had 1 tickets let. As did Les Mis, Avenue Q...finally I just asked the guy if he had any shows that had 2 seats together, and he gave me 2 tickets to Altar Boyz.

Now, D and I had no idea what this would be about until we got there. It turned out to be a freaking hilarious spoof on Christianity. If you haven't grown up in a church or masses, you probably wouldn't find it funny, but...it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Not like insulting-spoof, but...just...funny.

I was very much entertained. Would recommend it. Though I still want to see Spelling Bee and Wicked. Haha.

little problem

Hey, so I have someone for you.

Oh yeah?

He's a doctor. A really good guy. But there's one little problem...

Uhh...OK

How tall are you?

5'4". 5'5" max.

Are you sure? Stand up for a sec

(He measures me against himself)

OK, I think it's OK.

* * * * *

Well, at least it's better than the time I had a similar conversation with someone whose "little problem" was "how important is it to you that he's smart?"

redemption

We were walking out of dinner after the tournament was over (best steak EVER...wrapped in bacon...)

So how do you feel?

Like what? Mentally? Or physically?

Both. Either.

I think...I think I'm proud of myself.

Good.

And he smiled to himself.

And I think...my feet are going to fall off.

I'm not sure if he kept smiling or not. Probably did. I think he was proud of himself too.

I like when I can make him smile. (Trust me, the man cannot smile for pictures - it's positively painful. Chandler-style.) But once in awhile, with a certain type of win - I can get a kodak moment.

Redeemed.
