someone said the other day at lunch (rather emphatically, i might add) that the downfall of their softball team last year was that they had too many girls. and that no girl will ever be able to sprint faster than any guy.
i took some offense to that statement.
i think the way the rules work is that you have to have a minimum of 2 girls on the team, and any run scored by a girl is worth 2 points.
i'm willing to concede that in general, a guy will be better than a girl at sports. i'm no feminazi by any stretch the imagination, but we're built differently, with far less muscle and far more fat. and the pride factor is a pretty big edge. guys will generally hit farther, throw better, run faster - and be more determined not to lose.
however, i think there's a very big difference between an athletic girl and an unathletic girl. (and let's just admit that the majority of the pool we have to work with are probably in the category of unathletic - to varying degrees.) while softball may be a game that doesn't require a huge amount of skill or fitness (let's face it - you spend most of your time sitting on the bench waiting to bat or standing in the field waiting for someone to hit something to you) - it's definitely true that an unathletic girl will just be a placeholder on your team while an unathletic guy has a higher chance at being useful. but is it fair to say that all guys are better than all girls?
i will concede that i can't run faster than any guy in shape. or any guy who's not necessarily athletic, but isn't overweight. but i would venture to say that between me, theresa, and heesun - there has to be more than one guy at church that we could outsprint.
that being said - i'm really looking forward to softball season and excited that our church has a league. and right after softball - football starts up again! in general i'm pretty excited about the sports ministry and when jay asked me to join, it was the one time in ministry ever that i didn't have to think about it. (or make a chart about it).
along those lines, i'm still on the fence/avoiding thinking about sgling next year.

All things being equal, a guy should outperform the girl. And when I say "all things being equal", that means similar age, size, fitness level, training, and experience. So that means a girl who is extremely fit or had a lot of training should beat an "average" guy. Unfortunately these days, the "average" guy is overweight and not in very good shape. So I don't think it would take much to find a girl who could outsprint the average guy.
