glory days

read this off of bobby's blog. dang hilarious. i miss mit.

dan: clinch like you're driving a bus. just drive the bus.

so a few years ago i was offered the nyu program and i turned it down. i had too much on my plate at the time and i just couldn't handle what adding coaching college kids was going to do to me. (reference 2003, when i spent 80% of spring semester trying to win the championships, and maybe 20% on academics, leading to locking myself in my room and busting out my thesis the week before it was due.)

and just like i respond when people ask me what possessed me to play football with a broken hand. "God knew how much it meant to me. He'll let me play"

well fortunately, i did graduate that year, and we won the cup to boot. serious glory days.

so a couple nyu boys have been training with us, and while we were out last week, they were lamenting that their coach sucks. i said something along the lines of how i'd turned that position down, when isaac starts shaking my by the shoulders. "WHY DID YOU TURN IT DOOOOOOOWN?!?!?!"

it's nice to feel wanted. even if you're getting shoved around in the process.

so i've been contemplating rounding out this year as a coach. i guess mike is graduating so it's only for one more season...and it's relatively low committment. i only have to train the two of them, and they come up here. hrmm. sure would be fun to get back ... though i don't think i could coach against any of my old students. eh, there aren't any left at this point anyhow. but maybe i can train the nyu boys to beat cornell and help mit along...

and it'd be nice to reappear in a setting where i'd made a mark. i don't know if i can subject myself to that kind of suspense again. but at least i can't break bones while coaching and spectating...
